01 Start with a product and customer fit
Decide which product types your customers buy repeatedly, what price point they expect, and what sales channels you intend to use. A product that fits one retail store may not work for another, especially when package size, seasonality or shipping costs differ.
Build a small shortlist using consistent identifiers such as brand, model, UPC and ASIN. Verify that the listing and your intended sales-channel catalog refer to the same exact variation.
02 Calculate a realistic landed cost
Your true purchasing cost is the wholesale unit cost plus inbound shipping, receiving, applicable taxes and any fees that apply to your channel. For marketplace resellers, include selling fees, fulfillment charges, returns, storage and advertising before estimating margin.
Request prices at the quantities you can actually purchase. Ask whether shipping, handling and case packs change as your order size changes. Do not treat advertised retail prices as guaranteed sales prices.
03 Check account, product and authorization requirements
Wholesale suppliers may request company details, business registration, resale documents, shipping information or information about how you plan to sell. Prepare those before applying to reduce back-and-forth.
A supplier product listing or ordinary purchase invoice does not automatically grant permission to sell on every marketplace. If authorization or ungating documentation is needed, confirm its availability and acceptability before you commit funds.
04 Begin with an order you can evaluate
Check the minimum order quantity and case pack for every item. Ask about stock availability, delivery estimates, payment terms, returns and how damages or shortages are handled. Keep a written record of the exact SKU and agreed price.
A first order should be manageable enough to test your assumptions about demand, costs and fulfillment. Review the outcome before increasing quantities.
